A bingo card and equipment supplier based in St. Catherines, Ontario was strapped with fines totaling $85,000 after an employee suffered serious injuries to his arm while on the job. Bingo Press & Specialty Limited allegedly defied the Occupational Health and Safety Act, which in part made the employee's injury possible.
The accident took place in May 2003, when an employee who was running a printing press got his arm caught between the machine's rollers. The company neglected to maintain a guarding device on the equipment, as required by the Occupational Health and Safety Act. The injury ultimately necessitated the surgical amputation of the employee's arm up to the elbow.
Bingo Press & Specialty Limited entered a guilty plea and was fined the $85,000, in addition to a 25 percent victim fine surcharge, which is collected to aid crime victims.
