Officials in Jefferson Parish, Louisiana have proposed abolishing the town's regulatory office, which oversees bingo operations. The reason cited for this recommendation was the drop in bingo attendance, creating a situation by which the cost of maintaining the office exceeds revenues it generates through bingo fees.
If authorities decide to implement this suggestion, bingo operations would still receive oversight from the Louisiana Revenue Department. The department collects fees and stages random inspections of the seven bingo halls operated in Jefferson Parish.
This is not the first time that Jefferson Parish has attempted to abolish the regulatory office. In 2003, a similar effort was staged, but the measure never came to a vote.
