War Veteran Murdered Over Bingo Theft

The small town of Charlevoix, Michigan is reeling from the recent murder of World War II veteran Hubert William Brady, 79, an alleged attempt to cover up a bingo scandal.

Brady, assistant to David Edward Goldstick, 57, is believed to have discovered evidence that Goldstick, bookkeeper for the Veterans of Foreign Wars post, had stolen profits from bingo games meant to benefit the post.

Sheriff George Lasater said that Goldstick has admitted to the slaying while speaking to Lt. Mike Wheat, and made statements leading police to believe that he was involved in the December fire that burned the post’s office. The fire had been ruled accidental, resulting from an electrical problem, but the investigation has been reopened.

Many records from the post’s operations, including bingo operations were destroyed in the December fire, and police are currently examining the remaining records of Bingo profits to try to find out whether there are discrepancies in the bookkeeping, and if so, how much Goldstick may have stolen.

Post Commander Charles Butcher expressed shock at the killing, saying that he knew of no bad blood between the two men. He also expressed doubts as to the alleged bingo thefts, saying that he personally signed off on all checks and would have known if Goldstick had embezzled funds.
