The Mecca hall in the Forge, in the east end of Glasgow, Scotland, was a scene of huge excitement as the numbers were called in the second annual Ground Shaker national bingo game. When the winning ‘1’ was called, another club called bingo, but mistakenly so. Judges verified the win over the televised system, and members of the club jumped up and down, hugged each other, cheered, and yelled when they realized their club had won the grand prize, £1 million!
With 1200 members of the club, that adds up to just over £830 per member. Club general manager Billy MacLeod was quoted as saying that it was the most incredible moment in over 20 years in the bingo industry. He said it was the first time he’d seen the whole club happy, with everyone winning, everyone walking out of the club with a smile.
Players will receive their prize checks at a huge party at the Forge next Saturday.
Ground Shaker, a free bingo competition run throughout the UK, is a promotion by the UK’s National Bingo Association, designed to increase the number of winners in UK bingo and increase popularity of National Bingo, a game in which 500 bingo clubs are linked for games every night.
