With more than 90,000 players in 190 bingo games, showing receipts totaling $801,924, the Boys & Girls Club of Brownsville, Texas still claims that the past 15 months have shown a profit of only $26,000 after operating expenses. City officials have raised concerns about the organization’s treatment of bingo funds following the club’s request for $62,000 to help run summer programs for 1,200 city children.
In 2000, bingo raised about $56,820 for the Boys & Girls Club, while in 2001 and 2002, the club made less than $5,000, and may have even reported losses. Among unexplained issues was a payment of $23,000 for an employee’s past taxes. The club claimed that it was an accounting error in which there was confusion between two different accountants as to who was responsible for the employee's tax payments. City officials raised questions as to why the funding shortfall was only reported in an emergency meeting two weeks before the summer programs are scheduled to begin. The Boys & Girls Club has sent a representative from the national office to examine the situation and determine if there was any irregularity in use of the club’s bingo funds. So far, there has been no report of wrongdoing.
