A new theatrical production about the foibles of nuns will offer the audience a new look at bingo. In “Sister Bernie’s Bingo Bash,” Mary McHale, Susan Gaspar, and Jon Marco tell the unlikely story of a nun named Sister Bernie who needs to raise money for her church to ensure a home for herself, Sister Cherise, a former carnival worker, and Rev. Martini, who wants to be a game show host.
The three come up with a wild bingo game based on the seven deadly sins, and they give out odd prizes. Among the bingo prizes are lamps, umbrellas, even a blinking Virgin Mary, which are given out to the audience. Audience members actually play the bingo game –seven cards in all. And what’s more – no matter what the prize, audience members are sure to be thrilled to win.
The show is performed in theaters and churches - anywhere there’s a venue. Since it’s based on bingo, the Catholic Church’s biggest fundraiser, it’s only fitting that $1 from every ticket goes to a non-profit organization, and the show is used by churches as a fundraiser. The show, which started off in Illinois, is currently making its way across the U.S.
