Teresa Villegas, at 41, is traveling with her exhibit of 54 paintings, based on lotería, the Mexican version of bingo. She first saw the game when she was a freshman in college. She traveled to Mexico during spring break, and found a fair in the town of Nyarite. Villegas loved the Mexican bingo immediately because of the vivid, colorful pictures. Lotería differs from the standard bingo in that it uses images instead of numbers, and a deck of cards instead of a cage of balls.
A painter, Villegas used as a template the Don Clemente Gallo lotería board which is more than 100 years old. Using the images on the bingo-like board as a guide, Villegas painted 54 wood panels, to represent the 54 cards in the lotería deck. She used images from daily life in Mexico; a sweet bread, a Mexican soup, even a pack of gum. She used the heart which appears in the original game, claiming that she couldn’t leave the heart out.
