Indiana’s American Legion Post 499, which was closed for 13 days, has reopened, with its bingo license intact. The Indiana State Excise Police disabled the 16 illegal electronic gambling machines, and the Indiana Department of Revenue concluded that the post owed about $180,000 in fines and fees related to the post’s gambling operations.

Legion officials said that the post relied on revenues from the bingo and the gambling machines to pay its mortgage. The state renewed the organization’s bingo license, allowing the Legion post to reopen after it closed on May 29th, but the electronic gambling machines will no longer be active, and the post plans to sell the current building and move to a smaller, more cost-efficient building.

The Legion has been fined several times in the past for underreporting bingo and pull-tab revenues as well as operating the illegal electronic machines, known as cherry masters.
