Shippensburg Lions Club in Pennsylvania is celebrating another year of bingo. The yearly fair is an exciting event for the whole community, and the Lions Club is an important part of it. Earl Nollenberger, a Lions Club member, organizes the bingo tent each year. Nollenberger, 55, is a professor of biology at Shippensburg University.
Nollenberger was quoted as saying that the bingo tent is an integral part of the fair. It provides both entertainment and an opportunity to contribute to the community. Half the money taken in by the bingo tent is distributed back to the players as jackpots, but the other half is used to aid the Lions Club in their charitable ventures.
The Shippensburg Lions Club has chosen to focus their charitable efforts on the field of eyesight. They sponsor vision tests, and the Lions Club has recently started promoting diabetes screening, because diabetes is currently the number one cause of blindness among Americans. In addition, the club’s charity funds sponsor eyeglasses for those who cannot afford eyeglasses.
