Vienna, Virginia, needs about $2.8 million to renovate their firehouse, one of the oldest in Fairfax County. Fairfax County supplied over half of the budget, and the firehouse received a grant from the state for $50,000. So where will the rest of the money come from?
According to VVFD President Howard Springsteen, most of that money will come from bingo, which has so far raised an estimated $700,000 for the renovation. Every Sunday evening at 4pm, they start the bingo preparations. Customers start buying their bingo cards at 5pm, and the games begin. Prizes are high, with a recent prize of over $2,500.
With the bingo money, the firehouse will be bigger by about 80%, and there will be new kitchen facilities, offices, and sleeping areas. The building, which was built in 1958, currently houses 22 paid firefighters and about 50 volunteers. |
