As a measure to combat the illegal, and wildly popular Jueteng numbers game, the Philippine government is reportedly attempting to launch a similar game, going by the name “bingo-combo.” The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (Pagcor) is expected to be responsible for operating the bingo-combo game. Although similar to the illicit Jueteng, bingo-combo is operated mechanically, while the former is manually run. Other differences include betting limits, namely the fact that Jueteng has none, while bingo-combo features lower stakes, as well as prizes.
Critics have alleged that the bingo-combo effort will not succeed in wiping out Jueteng. According to Cebuano Sen. Serge Osmeña III, for example, bingo-combo's lower stakes and prizes will make it a poor competitor for Jueteng.
Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, who was herself caught up in a major Jueteng scandal, which took hold of the country some months ago, recently announced that all operators had until September 21st to shut down the illegal game.
