Electronic bingo machines just went live at the Casino San Pablo, and one assemblywoman is already fighting them. The Lytton Band of Pomo Indians, the tribe that operates the casino, decided to go with the bingo machines, which look and feel a lot like slot machines, but are considered class II machines, after being denied a compact which would have allowed class III machines.
The tribe had negotiated a compact with California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, but the legislature refused to support the compact. Now Assemblywoman Loni Hancock, a Democrat, has asked Attorney General Bill Lockyer to investigate the machines and determine whether they are legal.
A spokesman for the tribe said that Hancock should be discussing the issue with the Indian Gaming Commission, and noted that it is ironic that Hancock blocked the passing of the compact, because the compact would have given the state control over the slot machines and avoided the bingo machines entirely |
