Southern hospitality is usually a forte of states like Alabama, but video bingo machines seem to have worn out their welcome in the Yellowhammer State. Alabama's Governor and Attorney General are leading the fight to officially ban video bingo through an amendment to the state's constitution. This means that, if the proposal passes through legislature, Alabama voters would have to decide, once and for all, to authorize video bingo halls or not.
Some proponents of video bingo claim that the governmental lobby to outlaw the machinated gaming halls in Alabama is funded by casino groups from neighboring Mississippi who wish to permanently stamp out their competition. While it is uncertain in what direction the issue will turn, bingo will certainly not become obsolete in Alabama. If the ban is passed, video bingo halls across the state, including those at dog tracks, would have to close, but traditional land-based bingo halls using paper cards would be unaffected.
