Though video poker has been banned in South Carolina, another form of gambling, bingo, is on the horizon in the Palmetto State. The Catawba Indian tribe, the state's only federally-recognized band of Native Americans, is attempting to get its plans to build a high-stakes bingo hall approved by the South Carolina legislature. While the legislation is opposed by the residents of Santee, the planned location of the bingo hall, proponents argue that bingo will bring 1,800 much-needed jobs to the area.

Legislation authorizing the Catawba to go ahead with its bingo plans has, so far, overcome many hurdles in the state government. The state Senate Judiciary Committee must now allow for the bingo plans before the bill moves forward to the full Senate for further approval. If the Catawba end up getting full permission to proceed with its plans and build the high-stakes bingo hall, it is likely to fuel a desire for other gambling activities to be allowed in the state.
