A Catholic Community in Santa Fe, New Mexico, recently decided to give up its yearly fundraising $50,000 draw for fear of contributing to gambling addiction. Following a statement by the community pastor that games of chance, such as bingo and raffles, could eventually contradict the church's anti-gambling spirit, the community agreed to cancel its annual draw.
The move is apparently a part of a larger effort by church leaders to promote other ways of collecting money and discourage raffle and bingo fundraising. Indeed, a Canadian bishop recently triggered an uproar when he threatened to blacklist schools that hosted bingo fundraisers.
