Bingo is no longer a game just for grandmas and middle-aged housewives; its popularity is budding among younger— yes, mostly female— populations. A UK-based bingo and casino operator, Gala Group, issued a statement saying that their recent financial growths were spawned by the increasing number of young women who have begun frequenting its bingo halls.
The shift in popularity is due in part to Bingo's reputation makeover, which started in the late 1990's, when Gala revamped its bingo venues to win over younger audiences. According to Gala, as recent as under a decade ago, the overwhelming majority of bingo players were women over the age of 50. The latest figures, however, show that women under 35 now comprise a significant component of industry patrons.
And where are all these young ladies coming from? It seems as though the girls are leaving the nightclubs and hitting the bingo halls. According to Luminar, the UK's biggest nightclub operator, sales for several venues indeed have recently dropped.
