An Alabama State Representative recently proposed an amendment to the state constitution to expand the number of venues that would carry electronic bingo games. The proposed amendment would also tax the games to benefit the state's Medicaid program, which is in severe need of funding. Amendment supporters claim that taxes from bingo machines could bring the state an additional 75 million dollars a year in revenue.
Currently, bingo machines are available at racetracks in Macon and Greene counties, with proceeds benefiting charities. The new legislation would allow bingo machines to be installed in Mobile and Birmingham racetracks as well.
Should the Alabama legislature approve the amendment, the measure will still require the approval of state voters in a statewide referendum.
