Many residents of North Carolina towns close to the South Carolina state lines are traveling south for Bingo in pursuit of the latter's famed payouts. North Carolina's bingo halls can offer but a maximum of $1,500 on any given night, and only twice a week. In South Carolina, establishments provide bingo on a grander scale.
Although most bingo halls are considered class B, which means that they are limited to $8,000 of distibuted prize money per night, a number of class AA halls proffer between $50,000 and $250,000.
In North Carolina, bingo regulations are most specific, with distinctions being made between charitable bingo and what's referred to as "beach bingo." Charitable bingo games may give away a maximum $500 per game and $1,500 a night, twice a week. Beach Bingo winnings are capped at $10, but there is no limit to how many games can be played, so that technically, bingo enthusiasts could play bingo 24-7.
The big payouts in South Carolina bingo halls are so popular among the state's northern neighbors that on many nights, parking lots are simply littered with cars with North Carolina plates.
