Since being revoked of the agreement that allowed the Dakota Tipi First Nation to hold bingo games in 2002, the First Nation has been hard at work fighting to reopen its Dakota Tipi Bingo Palace in Manitoba province. Three year's later, they are beginning to witness the fruits of their labor with the unveiling of the renamed Dakota Tipi Community Gaming Centre.
The Manitoba Gaming Control Commission initially repealed their agreement with the Tipi Bingo Palace after claiming that the First Nation mismanaged bingo funds between January of 2001 and August of 2002. In total, the auditor general's report found $100,000 to have either gone missing or misspent.
For the time being, the Dakota Tipi Community Gaming Centre will offer only bingo, but the First Nation is in the process of trying to get slot machines reinstated on the hall's premises within the coming months.
Proceeds from the bingo games are planned to be divided among various charitable ventures including education, food relief and cultural programs for the Dakota Tipi community.
