UK privately-owned casino group Gala has experienced recent economic successes in general, and in the company's bingo and casino sectors in particular. Overall sales increasing by 6.9 per cent over the seven weeks leading up to January 7, 2005, while Gala's bingo pursuits enjoyed a 7.2 per cent increase in sales. Gala attributed its gains in part to a prosperous holiday season.
This recent growth has also translated into a shift in demography for membership in Gala's 166 bingo halls. Although the average age of existing members falls between 35 and 40 years of age, new members are, on average, just 25 years old. A Gala executive said that bingo had become a popular outing for young people, with games ending before ten, leaving room for later night-life.
